Dear
teachers and friends,
Time is
flying, I moved from New York to
Phoenix, Arizona 14 years ago. I love living in Phoenix.
I enjoy the
sun and the dry weather. It is a large enough city, but not as overbuild
as the neighboring state of California. I felt a little lonely here
until I meet my husband. There is no actual Chinatown here. Chinese or
Asian live sparsely over the Valley. So the American food has rewarded me
for 20 more lbs (See the pictures). I never met a Chinese in my
neighborhood, just only a couple of Pilipino. The things we like
to do is
driving around to explore our state.

Phoenix is the capital of Arizona and has all the big city amenities:
relaxing resorts, award winning golf courts, big shopping malls,
hiking
trails and casinos. If you want to experience the “Old West”, Arizona
is the best place to come. I remember growing up watching Westerns
with my elder brother. It always increased my excitement to watch a
cowboy shooting story of the Wild West, the struggle of the first
immigrants to survive in this new land and the courage they showed.

You can
visit Tombstone, a real town where Wyatt Earp-the famous Western gun
fighter lived and worked, and see that there’s more than the story
portrayed in the movies. The action of the Wild West lives with
shoot outs and round ups still performed today. It is also a place
where I found how our ancestor Chinamen struggle very hard doing
their laundry business, were sometimes killed by the crazy gunmen and are buried in the graveyard
where they call Boot Hill. If you die in
bed you
die
without boots on but if you die violently you are said to die with
your boots on. They all died that way in
Tombstone.

Early in its history,
Arizona’s economy relied on the “five C’s”: copper, cotton, cattle, citrus,
and climate
(tourism). Nowadays, citrus is slowly disappearing replaced by
construction.
My
friends visited me in May 2010 and commented that Phoenix is a
beautiful city but very hot. Yes, Arizona is best known for its
desert landscape, which is rich in plants such as the cactus. There
is special cactus, Saguaro, only found here. It is also known for
its climate, which presents exceptionally hot summers and mild
winters.
My
husband and I brought a retirement home in Goodyear which is in the
desert outside of Phoenix. We love this suburban community featuring
square miles of plains, rivers, two lakes and the beautiful Estrella
(Spanish for Star) Mountains.
