Due to
its variation in elevation, Arizona is the state with two very
different areas. One, where I live, has days over 100 °F (38°C)
(Phoenix) in Summer. The other is much colder, with most days with a
low temperature below freezing (Flagstaff )
in Winter. |

A three hour drive takes us to Lynx Lake
which is our favorite place to escape the desert heat. With mild
weather, the cool Ponderosa pine forest, trout fishing, boating,
mountain hiking, horseback riding and bird watching attract visitors
like us. The lake was formed when a dam was put in Lynx Creek. Arizona
State Game and Fish Department periodically stocks the lake with
rainbow trout, largemouth bass and crappie. We have no luck in fishing
even when we try.
Lynx Lake provided picnic areas making it
a great family gathering place on both south and north shores
including tables and grills. It also has a nice campground on the
western side of the lake. My husband and I have never camped there,
but we will try later. |

Do you know Arizona is called the Grand Canyon State? How could we
forget the wonderful trip to Grand Canyon six years ago with my step
daughter, her husband and the little granddaughter still in her
mother’s belly.
Vast, magnificent and beautiful, the Grand Canyon is Arizona’s most
distinguishable landmark – and a natural wonder that you simply have
to see to believe. Stretching miles from end to end, steep, rocky
walls descend more than a mile to the canyon’s floor, where the wild
Colorado River traces a swift course southwest.

There are a number of different ways to arrive at the canyon. We
chose to drive to a quaint mountain town called Williams known as
the “Gateway to the Grand Canyon” and hopped aboard the restored
vintage locomotive Grand Canyon Railway for a two-hour journey by
rail right into the national park.
The Grand Canyon Railway offers a unique experience. We grabbed a
seat in the observation dome and watched as the countryside changed
before our eyes. We went out on the back to feel the wind in our
hair then saw cowboys riding up on horses. They staged a pretend
train robbery which was a lot of fun, very exciting.

Grand
Canyon has number of places to stay from grand old lodges to upscale
inns. We chose to stay in a small lodge located around the woods.
The rooms were very basic but clean. We enjoyed exploring and hiking
in the Coconino National Forest. We even saw a group of deer in
front of our lodge. They let us get very close to them they were so
tame. It was unique because that doesn’t happen in the city though
now that we live outside of town in the desert we see coyote and
rabbits all the time. |
